Here are some examples of a few cases:
- Pregnancy
- Respiratory problems
- Breast cancer
- Back pain/sciatica
- Menstrual pain/polycystic ovarian syndrome
- Asthma & eczema
- Chronic fatigue & digestive problems
- Depression
Pregnancy
A twenty-six year old woman came for treatment having had a miscarriage, wanting to get pregnant again. She was prescribed a homeopathic medicine called Sepia.
She became pregnant within two months of the remedy and continued to have & respond well to homeopathic treatment throughout her pregnancy. This included remedies for persistant and debilitating morning sickness, heartburn/reflux, haemorrhoids, and carpel tunnel syndrome. In addition to Sepia, Nux vomica, Robinia, Collinsonia, and Sulphur were prescribed.
Respiratory problems
A fifty-six year old woman who came with a long history of bronchiectasis. She had required many courses of antibiotics over her lifetime, averaging at least six chest infections a year, and had been hospitalised with pneumonia and haemoptysis. Her chest physician recommended permanent long term antibiotics, whilst her GP suggested she try homeopathy. Her main symptoms were breathlessness, and a productive cough with greenish yellow sputum. She had also had menopausal symptoms for many years.
She was prescribed kali-sulphuricum based on her symptoms.
Given the chronic and long standing nature of the condition, the patient was also prescribed other deep acting remedies including bacillinum and folliculinum. Her menopausal symptoms responded well to this latter remedy in particular, as well as to lachesis, a great menopausal remedy. Over the course of a year and a half on these four remedies, the patient had no chest infections (all sputum analysis clear), reduced expectoration, less breathlessness, and reported improved energy and sleep. In addition, she reported a big improvement in her hot flushes.
Breast cancer
A thirty-five year old female who had found a lump on her breast. A mammogram had confirmed a malignant growth in the milk duct. She had surgery to remove the lump and when came for treatment was undergoing radiotherapy, and taking Tamoxifen. Her main symptoms when she came for treatment were extreme tiredness - sleeping approx 18-19 hours a day. She also had loss of appetite and much weight loss. She also complained of feeling angry, depressed, and feelings of disgust with her body.
An intensive course of remedies was prescribed, including radium bromatum, conium maculatum, and carcinosin. Over the next six months she reported big improvements, with an increase in energy and more time awake during the day, significant weight gain, improvement in her mood, and improved body image. This is a good example of conventional medicine and homeopathy working together to produce a better standard of health.
Back pain/sciatica
A sixty-seven year old gentleman presenting with lower back pain and sciatica. He had some relief with physiotherapy, osteopathy and yoga. He had a history of polyps in colon, TURP, and atherosclerosis/myocardial infarction ten years ago.
The homeopathic medicine prescribed in this case was kali carbonicum
He reported an 80% improvement in his pain within one month of commencing the remedy. An unexpected effect of treatment over several months was a reduction in his cholesterol levels to within normal limits.
Menstrual pain/polycystic ovarian syndrome
A twenty-five year old woman with severe cramping pain just before, and for the first three days of her period. She complained of a very irregular cycle. Ultrasound showed cysts on her ovaries. She was extremely irritable and sometimes tearful from a week before her period.
After a series of remedies including pulsatilla, carcinosin, dysentry co., and magnesium muriaticum, this woman now reports having pain free periods, and has a much improved mood before and during her period.
Asthma/eczema
A three year old girl was brought in by her mother on the recommendation of her GP, after two episodes of pneumonia that had been treated with antibiotics. Since the pneumonia she had developed asthma type symptoms that had been treated with Ventolin. The girl was intolerant of cow's milk (triggering her eczema) and had a history of ear infections and frequent colds.
Treatment involved a course of homeopathic remedies that included phosphorus, silica, and tuberculinum. The mother reported improved energy, with no further recurrences of chest infections or asthmatic symptoms, an improvement in her eczema, and in her susceptibility to colds.
Chronic fatigue and digestive problems
A 24 year old female came for help with chronic fatigue of six years duration, accompanied by frequent recurrent viral infections, shingles, sinusitis, bronchitis and thrush. She also had been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), had many food allergies, frequent alternating constipation and diarrhoea, and excessive abdominal bloating.
The patient responded well to a course of medicines that increased her energy levels significantly, as well as reducing her IBS symptoms and sensitivity to different foods. Homeopathic medicines prescribed included argentum nitricum, mercurius, morbillinum, ipecac, proteus, pertussin, carbo veg, cytomeglavirus, and cuprum metallicum.
Depression
A 36 year old female presented with low mood and overwhelming feelings of sadness, an inability to stop ruminating on negative thoughts, an aversion to company, low self esteem, feelings of anxiety, anger and guilt, loss of appetite, nausea in the mornings, low energy, early morning wakening, and a loss of concentration.
She was advised to take antidepressants by her GP but was keen to try an alternative before doing this, as had disliked being on antidepressants in the past.
The remedy prescribed here was germanium metallicum. At three week follow up the patient reported that the nausea had gone and her appetite had improved, sleep was much improved, and that she had more energy. Her rumination and low mood was 75% better and she was now able to concentrate, for example by reading for short periods.
The patient continued to take the remedy for the next three months (with an intercurrent dose of carcinosin), until she felt that she was 'back to her old self'.
